Avalanche Safety Training

WHY AST...?

  • Avalanche safety training is a VITAL certification for any winter activity. Knowing what to do if something goes wrong in the winter can save someone’s life.
  • In reality, you shouldn’t be taking students into any dangerous environments where there could be ANY risk of an avalanche. However, understanding how to assess winter terrain and how to maneuver it’s landscape is a requirement if you are a field leader, and a great idea to share knowledge with students.
  • Otherwise, do NOT pursue winter activities with students in mountainous regions unless it is a controlled area.

  • Earn your AST1 certification and ideally have an AST2 certification... It's always better to know more than not enough.

Peaks Campus is a newly funded pursuits program initiative developed by the Livingstone Range School District.
It's goal is to provide LRSD schools - especially those within the Crowsnest Pass - place-based experiential learning opportunities.

Peaks Campus and LRSD Pursuits offer students outdoor classes at a more affordable price than external companies.

LRSD Pursuits offer a 2-day $175 AST1 course in February.
