Being FireSmart is What Helps Communities Avoid Accidents Like the Picture Above!
FireSmart Canada offers a training course called FireSmart 101. This course:
This would be a great educational resource for you and your students to become aware of the dangers of wildfires, how they arise, how they are controlled, and what we can do as a community to be safe and mitigate the hazards of the elements. |
FireSmart Canada offers services, communal programs, workshops and resources for people wanting to learn more about how to prevent, as well as reduce, the impact of wildfires. Look into their Wildfire Community Preparedness Day which encourages citizens to take actions that increase their home, neighbourhood, and community’s resilience to wildfire. This would be a great school and OE initiative.

Download the FireSmart Canada App! The app describes: “FireSmart Begins at Home app engages homeowners in voluntary wildfire mitigation activities through a self-conducted home assessment. The app guides users through a series of questions to help identify specific actions that may reduce the impact of wildfires on homes and properties."
Other general lesson ideas include:
- A mock evacuation - if your town was on fire and you had to evacuate your home, what would you bring? Where would you go? What materials/resources/equipment/tools would you bring with you? E.g. fire, teaching kids about the Fort McMurray Fire.
- The How-to's of preventing wildfires while camping.
- Creating your own basic community action plan for when a fire threatens your community.
